In India, tremendous progress has been made in all domains related to terracotta and ceramics. There is inflow of technology, design and development; consequently our ceramic industries are at par with developed countries. The export figures of various ceramic products present a compelling testimony to these achievements. However, this progress is confined only to organised sector and also has a lot of scope for improvement.
Since the handicraft sector falls in the unorganized sector, such free flow of knowledge or information about raw materials, design concepts, technology and marketing support is largely unfound. This has resulted in artisans prodcuing the same type of products over the years to make their ends meet leading to very little scope for innovation in their work.
Despite these challenges these artisans have history and tradition in their favour but no direction to proceed in the rapidly evolving world. Various steps have been taken and resource center is a step towards creating a single window assistance for all stakeholders alike which they can adopt, within their financial resources.
It has also been felt that there is a need to have Service Centre for servicing the needs of all stake holders of the craft. This facility is also available in the resource center. Availability of such resource centers will assist different stake holders in accessing information and guidance reliably and in a time bound manner.
This centre will also be a platform for constant interaction between different players of the craft environment. However the Resource Centre will not directly involve itself in the implementation of the programme but will hand hold different enterprises/artisans as per their need. It will act as an incubator for different developing enterprises.
Spread over acovered space of 2500 sq. m the Resource Center is equiped with all basic amenities. It is situated in the in Barasat the district headquarters of South 24 Parganas and an upcoming business hub. It is well connected by Road and Railways and 15km from the nearest airport. National Highway-32 is just 3 km from the proposed site.
For development of the rural economy in agglomeration mode, adoption of cluster approach is the most appropriate tool. In this approach, it is essential to adopt inclusive methods for overall development of all the stake holders of the cluster so that the particular craft category is benefited in long run.
